Google Zukunftswerkstatt

Google's Zukunftswerkstatt (German for "Future Workshop") is a physical training center found in every Google office in Germany. They provide an opportunity to participate in Google's many digital skills education programs under one roof, enabling Germans to sharpen their skills for the digital world. They also represent a physical embodiment of Google while giving the public a space to experience the Google environment firsthand.

With great visibility potential from street level, the architectural concept was to highlight the public presence via a series of technology-inspired forms, flowing lines and linear lights. The sculptural ceiling visually draws visitors through a large communal waiting space, complete with reception area, cafe and lounge area. The destination - two large multifunctional classrooms where daily workshops help to promote Googles mission of teaching and sharing.

Visual communication graphics play a vital role in bringing the space alive. Challenges of wayfinding were solved through clean and logical graphics throughout the space, culminating in a large, floor to ceiling mural adorning the entry reception. The hand-painted mural depicts a condensed, isometric Hamburg landscape with its many famous landmarks, interspersed with quirky details and elements specific to Google Zukunftswerkstatt. Google Maps inspired the perspective and composition of the landscape, subsequently tying together various pieces of the company's portfolio.
